States Push Trump’s Elections Agenda as SAVE America Act Stalls in Senate
WASHINGTON — The SAVE America Act is on life support in the U.S. Senate after lawmakers adjourned for spring break last night. Once again, President Trump’s elections agenda appears to have come up short at the federal level.
Samantha Tarazi, Voting Rights Lab Co-Founder and CEO, issued the following statement:
“The lesson is clear: President Trump’s elections agenda is too extreme and deeply unpopular. The American people have made that known, and the Senate’s decision to abandon a vote on the SAVE America Act reflects that.
“State legislatures are now the top threat to the freedom to vote this November. The president’s ongoing lies on the 2020 election are designed to spark state action and sow voter doubts ahead of this year’s midterms — and the fight is far from over.”
South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden signed a state proof of citizenship bill into law on Thursday, while bills in Florida and Utah are awaiting their governors’ signatures. None of the bills go as far as the SAVE America Act or the president’s March 2025 executive order.
