Despite Court Order, Trump Marching Orders on Elections Continue At State Level
WASHINGTON — Today, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly ruled the proof-of-citizenship requirement to vote in President Trump’s executive order on elections is unconstitutional. Kollar-Kotelly previously issued a preliminary injunction against the executive order in April.
This is the first court ruling blocking President Trump’s March 2025 executive order as unconstitutional on the merits.
Samantha Tarazi, Chief Executive Officer of Voting Rights Lab, issued the following statement in response:
“The decision is further proof that President Trump’s extreme election agenda is an unconstitutional abuse of power. In America, the rules of our elections are set by the states and Congress, not rogue orders coming from the White House.
“Regardless of what happens in the courts, Trump’s executive order on elections was always intended to be marching orders for his allies in state legislatures. Americans of all political stripes must continue to come together to reject these efforts to weaken free and fair elections in America.”
