Will of North Carolina Voters Prevails in Supreme Court Election, But Dangerous Precedent Set
Today, Judge Jefferson Griffin conceded to Justice Allison Riggs after a six-month legal battle challenging more than 60,000 votes in the North Carolina state Supreme Court election. The concession came after a U.S. District Court judge rejected Griffin’s challenge on Monday and ordered the North Carolina State Board of Elections to certify Riggs as the winner of the election.
Samantha Tarazi, Voting Rights Lab co-founder and chief operating officer, issued the following statement in response:
“The will of North Carolina voters was upheld today, but Judge Griffin’s bad-faith challenge to the results of a free and fair election has set a dangerous precedent. Blatantly partisan attempts to overturn election results like we saw in North Carolina should never happen again.”
