‘Your Vote and Your Data are the Targets’ as House Passes SAVE America Act

WASHINGTON — As the Trump administration rapidly escalates attempts to interfere in local elections — most recently in Minnesota and Georgia — the U.S. House of Representatives just approved the SAVE America Act.

Modeled on the SAVE Act approved in the House in April 2025, the bill would require all Americans to provide proof of citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, to register to vote. It also seeks to mandate federal oversight of state voter rolls — an ongoing target of the Trump administration — and would create a nationwide photo ID requirement for both in-person and mail voters.

Samantha Tarazi, Voting Rights Lab Co-Founder and CEO, issued the following statement:

“President Trump wants to rip local control and seize private voter data from state election officials. The SAVE America Act shows his allies in Congress are itching to deliver.

“This bill would block millions of eligible citizens from registering to vote and extort states for access to private voter data. It’s a power grab — your vote and your data are the targets.

“Regardless of whether this bill can pass in the Senate, it sends clear marching orders for state lawmakers to enact Trump’s extreme elections agenda — all with an eye toward this year’s midterms.”
