Messaging to the Middle: Lessons Learned from Recent Democracy Fights
Thank you for checking out our poster at ComNet25 in Denver. Below are links to resources produced by Voting Rights Lab that helped defeat excessive bills nationwide that would have mandated voters provide a passport or birth certificate to register to vote.
All of this work is made possible by our Election Policy Tracker, which documents current election law and policy across all 50 states and Washington, DC. For more information, email Jae Aron: jae.aron@votingrightslab.org.
Research & Messaging
Drawing on qualitative messaging research conducted immediately after the 2024 election, we developed data-backed messaging and content to counter disinformation narratives around “noncitizens voting.”

Media Coverage
We used our 50-state policy expertise, messaging findings, and relationships with state and national reporters to shift media coverage on this issue from one about the virtual non-existence of noncitizen voting to one about government overreach and harm to voters.
- AP: Republican push for proof of citizenship to vote proves a tough sell in the states
- CNN: Red states forge ahead with proof-of-citizenship voting requirements, with Trump’s efforts likely going nowhere
- USA Today: These states want to adopt the SAVE Act: How could some married women be impacted?
- Washington Post: Prove citizenship to vote? For some married women, it might not be so easy.
